SOME LINKS TO SITES
RELATED TO THE 21st CENTURY
A few sites I found related to the 21st Century, links related to predictions
and Y2K issues. This page was originally developed for Gala 2000
held January 22, 2000 by the MIT Club of Boston. The page is still
maintained to see how many of the sites linked below survive the 100 years the Gala 2000 time capsule is sealed and also to see how many
outside predictions are fulfilled during that same time.

Upcoming Astronomical and Calendrical Events and Predictions
- A Total Lunar
Eclipse occurred on January 20-21, 2000
- just 2 days before MIT Club of Boston's Gala 2000. Because of sunlight refracting through Earth's atmosphere
during the lunar eclipse, and because of variations in the overall transparency
of the Earth's atmosphere, the totally eclipsed Moon's color could range from
a gray to a deep red to even orange. Please note that gray and red are
the school colors of MIT. It would be interesting to see if previous MIT Club of Boston Galas were timed near
major astronomical events given that three of MIT's past presidents worked in astronomy-related fields.
- There could be a
naked-eye comet this coming summer. We will learn during the summer of 2000 whether
this is a failed prediction or not, recalling the hype about Comet Kahoutek
back in 1973-74. According to this web site, Comet LINEAR could be brighter than previously expected. The comet broke
apart during the summer of 2000. NEW: I just learned that LINEAR found another comet that could be naked eye by Christmas 2001 if it
doesn't go non-LINEAR again!!:-)
The comet was discovered by a
robotic telescope operated by MIT Lincoln
Laboratory.
- The year 2000 is a leap year unlike 1000, 1900, 2100 or 3000. Go here to learn more. There are
additional outside links to calendar history, time scales in theoretical physics and on time travel on the page.
- There will be a grand conjunction of the five bright planets (Mercury,
Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) on May 5, 2000. The conjunction itself
will be a fulfilled prediction thanks to celestial mechanics, but this
site refutes the wild apocalyptic predictions sometimes associated with
this event.
- There is a transit of Venus coming in the year 2004. Click
here for more.
- A listing of major astronomical events from 2000 to past 2010 is
given here.

Predictions - in the graphic above are views of some MIT
related stuff seen through crystal balls. Note how difficult it is to
discern what those objects are. That symbolizes how murky and difficult
it is to see into the future.
